External doors are generally constructed using a 4"x2" frame morticed and tenoned built into the door to give ample strength and security to an external door, this also allows for a mortice chubb lock to be fitted to the door, you can't fit a mortice lock to a standard ledged and braced door, most insurance companies insist companies insist on one.
